GH Rap has truly come a long way, from recording on ordinary computers to Bedroom studios, now to an era where hope can clearly be seen written on the faces of young, talented and upcoming artistes, I can say with all certainty what the future will look like.
During the next few months, Ghana and the rest of the world is going to witness an INFLUX of Gh Rap music, from cell phones to radio stations to Television Shows, the Internet and the list goes on, I caught up with one of the pioneers of the Movement, you might know him formerly under the name Jae P but he now goes by the name KOBI ONYAME. As our featured GH Rap artiste for this week, here is KOBI Onyame telling the story the way it has been according to him……
Everyone has their time...I truly believe this. The time for Ghana and Ghanaians in the Hip-Hop industry to shine has come and GH Rap definitely helps to solidify our position. I'm Kobi Onyame (some people might know me as Jae P). I started out in the music industry in no other place but Ghana. I am an active member of the Hip-Hop group, The Haatsville Project (or just Haatsville for the day dot supporters) along with JaySo, Myth Ankasa, Skrach and The Canz. We formed back in 2000 with the vision to make good music that expresses our passions, our lifestyle and our pain. I believe The Haatsville Project has played an instrumental role which helped birth the existence of a strong and very talented movement in Ghana. The movement is GH Rap. It is Hip-Hop by all means, fueled by our very own eclectic and organic genres of music. It is made in Ghana, by Ghanaians not only for Ghanaians but for the world.
To be a part of this movement makes me immensely proud. Just thinking about the days we used to record our mix tapes from mini-disc to Cakewalk on a 512mb Windows PC (JaySo you feel me right!!!!!!!?) and thinking about where we've reached makes me believe the struggle has not been in vain - and yes it has been a struggle; a beautiful one nonetheless. We've shared studios, concert line-ups with some of the greats - Akon, KanYe West, Wyclef Jean, De La Soul, The Pharcyde and more. We've released singles, album's and shared our story with the public. We still have a long way to go, but to know that the movement is spreading and growing stronger with God's blessings, means much hope for the future of myself, Haatsville Music Group and GH Rap.
KOBI Onyame as our featured GH rap artiste for this week is currently based in UK, Glassgow living his dream as an Aced Hip Hop artiste with Ghanaian origin, check him out on any of the following web addresses
